Onyx Music Festival

Experimental Music Festival Branding Concept

Overview:

Music Festival branding often relies on a strict grid-based system - Blocks of information carefully constructed, with visual flair, no doubt, to ensure clear communication to attendees regarding activities.

For this project, I created my own music festival concept.
I was inspired by the origins of these festivals and events - a celebration of counter-culture. I wanted to take that idea a step forward. When searching for inspiration, the 90’s UK underground rave scene drew me in with high-contrast colors, loud fonts, and rich textures. From there, I expanded my research into more contemporary references that lean into expressive typography.

I wanted to create an expressive visual identity where you can see the idea behind the festival from the style:
breaking the rules, challenging norms, subverting expectations.

So I broke the grid.  Instead of rows to list artists, I used columns instead
The typemark became the brand, image, form, and grid.
.

Yet, I wonder if I broke the grid too much? This is my favorite piece of work, but I wonder if the information gets lost? Legibility and readability are there, but is it strong enough? Can you quickly scan the posters to get the info you’re looking for? Does the layout distract instead of support?

I think purely using the placement of letterforms to break the space was a fun challenge,  but I would try to find more balance between clarity and boldness. Instead, the typography could be more of a backdrop that interacts with the copy grid. With the black background, this alternate direction could also add some depth and dimension behind the static blocks of bordered text, playing more with negative space.
